Marketing Jargon Buster: Keyword Stuffing.

What is ‘Keyword stuffing’?

Keyword stuffing is the practice of filling webpages with keywords related to a product or service in an effort to rank higher in organic search.

For example: ‘Kitchen appliances for every occasion. Cheap kitchen appliances available at discounted prices. Our kitchen appliances are the cheapest available online. Shop our kitchen appliances today.’

Keyword stuffing also occurs in title tags and meta descriptions, URLs, anchor text and Alt text.

How does keyword stuffing affect SEO?

While it’s normal to use relevant keywords in your online content, keyword stuffing looks spammy and unnatural and can lead to discouraging users from interacting with your business.

Similarly, Google rewards high-quality user-first content so, if you stuff a page full of keywords, you are unlikely to rank well in search. It also violates Google’s spam policies and can result in your website being removed from search results.

All in all, keyword stuffing is something to avoid. Alternatively, use keywords wisely and strategically in your web content to help boost your rankings in organic search.
